About the Independent Theatre Workshop
The Independent Theatre Workshop was started by Gillian Oman
in 1993 and now has schools in Ranelagh and Drumcondra offering classes
in all aspects of the performing arts. We run weekly classes during
term time and intensive courses during the summer holidays catering for
Boys and Girls of all ages and abilities. We also have a thriving Youth
Theatre Company Independent Youth
Theatre. We cover a wide range of Drama, Singing and Dance
styles and hope to encourage a love of the arts in all it’s
forms.
Not all the teaching is confined to the
classroom!
During the year we often go on trips to the Theatre whenever there is
something suitable on. We also have an
annual trip to the West End in
London for the Seniors and Young Adults
and bi annual trips to Broadway,
New York !
Guest teachers and specialists
We regularly invite guest teachers and specialists in different aspects
of theatre to run workshops. In recent months Zoe Tyler the singing coach from Sky
1 series Hairspray the School Musical
and the BBC TV searches for Joseph
and Maria in the Sound of Music
worked with our students in unique workshops at the end of
January 2009. West End performer and Past Pupil Ben Morris who starred last year in
the Gaiety Panto having just finished Fiddler on the Roof and Louise Bowden (Mamma Mia, Mary
Poppins, Guys and Dolls) did a fabulous two day workshop and the
Musical Theatre faculty of Walnut
Hill School for the Arts in Boston came to work with our singing
students in February resulting in several of our students getting
scholarships to their 5 week summer programme in the States.

Short Play Festival
We like to promote our student’s own talents and creativity, and
also to give everyone the chance to perform in front of an audience.
Every year we run our own in house Original Short Play Festival. All
the students work together to write, direct, produce and perform in
their own original short plays in front of their friends and family and
an invited panel of judges (including top casting directors and theatre
professionals). Prizes are awarded in a range of categories. Last
year over 300 students took part in 47 short plays!

complete with costumes and sets. Every so often we will do
a whole school show, recent productions include Winter Wonderland featuring 320 of
our students in December 2008 and before that Once Upon a Time in the Liberty Hall
