About the Independent Theatre Workshop
The Independent Theatre Workshop was started
by Gillian Oman in 1993
and now has schools in Ranelagh and Drumcondra
offering classes
in all aspects of the performing arts. We
run weekly classes during term time and intensive
courses during the summer holidays catering
for Boys and Girls of all ages and abilities.
We also have a thriving Youth Theatre Company
Independent Youth Theatre. We cover a wide
range of Drama, Singing and Dance styles
and hope to encourage a love of the arts
in all it’s forms.
Not all the teaching is confined to the
classroom!
During the year we often go on trips to the Theatre whenever there is
something suitable on. We also have an
annual trip to the West End in London for the Seniors and Young Adults
and bi annual trips to Broadway, New York !
Guest teachers and specialists
We regularly invite guest teachers and
specialists in different aspects of theatre
to run workshops. Coming up we have Zoe Tyler the singing coach from Sky 1 series Hairspray the School Musical and the BBC TV searches for Joseph and Maria in the Sound of Music
who will be working with our students in unique workshops at the end of
January 2009. Last year West End performer and Past Pupil Ben Morris who is currently in the Gaiety Panto having just finished Fiddler on the Roof, and Louise Bowden (Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls) did a fabulous two day workshop and Musical Theatre star Susan McFadden will be in with us in the coming months too.

Short Play Festival
We like to promote our student’s
own talents and creativity, and also to
give everyone the chance to perform in
front of an audience. Every year we run
our own in house Original Short Play Festival.
All the students work together to write,
direct, produce and perform in their own
original short plays in front of their
friends and family and an invited panel
of judges (including top casting directors
and theatre professionals). Prizes are
awarded in a
range of categories. Last year over 300
students took part in 47 short plays!

School Shows
ITW students perform in professional and amateur productions throughout the year including performances with Lyric Opera, Festival Productions, the Gate Theatre, Spotlight Productions, Long Road, Opera Ireland
and more. Performing within the school they participate in our
annual Short Play competition and each of our Musical Theatre Groups put on a
production annually either in house or in a professional theatre.
Recent productions include Back to the 80's
by arrangement with Joseph Weinberger Ltd in the Pavilion Theatre and Seussical JR and Chicago. During the summer our intensive summer
courses always culminate in full performances for parents and friends
complete with costumes and sets. Every so often we will do
a whole school show, recent productions includeWinter Wonderland featuring 320 of our students in December 2008 and before that Once Upon a Time in the Liberty Hall Theatre 2007 and Grease is the Word 2005 in the Rupert Guinness Theatre in which all our students were involved both on stage and behind the scenes.
