Youth Theatre:

Independent youth theatre (IYT) is a Dublin based youth theatre of young people between the ages of 14 and 22 with even the slightest flair for the performing arts.

We believe in providing a safe and friendly environment to foster the insurmountable talent that is becoming more and more visible in young Irish performers.

We aim to produce a superhuman number of high-quality productions each year in which our members can become familiar with every aspect of putting on a show from fundraising to not saying  "Good Luck" on opening night.

We encourage teamwork and creativity as well as the development of a multitude of skills including busking, interpetive dance and cleaning up after rehearsals.

We work to build confidence as much as ability and most importantly, we strive to achieve all this whilst having the most fun that is humanly possible.

Projects and National Tours
IYT started up in 2004 with an aim to produce several projects a year and tour around the country. Already  we have participated in the National Theatre UK  Connections Festival  four years running and played The Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork The Riverbank Theatre, Kildare,  The Helix Space, Dublin, The Mill Theatre, Dundrum, The Ark, Dublin and the Space, Sligo.  We also developed a new work for the Young Fringe Festival  through an acting intensive course designed exclusively for IYT.

IYT are no strangers to theatre festivals though having performed in the Dublin Fringe Festival in September 2005 and the Fizzfest in the Helix in October 2005.  IYT followed with the premiere of The Spidermen by Ursula Rani Sarma as part of theNational Theatre Connections Festival 2006. We then participated in the NAYD Festival of Youth Theatres in Limerick in July followed by the production, over an intensive week long course in August, of  You don't know Jack  written and produced by the members themselves.  There followed a Busking session in Grafton Street and a Bag Pack in Tesco to raise funds for our productions of Brokenville by Philip Ridley and School Journey to the Centre of the Earth  in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum on December 5th. 2007 has seen us working with Kellie Reynolds developing an original play The Birdhouse and performing Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA) for this years NTConnections festival in Newbridge and Cork. Soon followed the inaugral  IYT Festival of Youth Theatre from May 22nd - 26th in T36, Parnell Square at which we  premiered The Birdhouse and also brought our production of DNA to Dublin!  2008 has featured more great things including the publishing of our first IYT Annual and an invitation to devise a piece for Barnardos. (to be continued...)

The Independent Youth Theatre meet on Thursday evenings off Grafton Street in their own unique venue. The young people work as a company throughout the year and currently membership is nominal with almost all costs being covered through fundraising activity. They work hard and are treated like real performers, and are fast becoming one of the most exciting young companies in the country.

How to join IYT

Auditions consist of a group workshop  and take place in September each year. We do take some new members on during the year so if you are interested in joining but missed the auditions please contact us on 01 496 8808 or e-mail iytinfo@gmail.com .
